Ultimately of Semitic origin, found with consonant correspondence as if descended from Proto-Semitic in Akkadian 𒇷 (burāšu, cypress), Hebrew בְּרוֹשׁ (bərṓš, cypress), Aramaic בְּרֹותָא / ܒܪܽܘܬܳܐ (bərōṯā, cypress). A prothetic variant is also encountered in Aramaic אברותא.
