Etymology 1
Disputed origin:
- Likely onomatopoeic in origin natively coined or perhaps with relation to Classical Syriac ܒܐܘܐ (baʾwāʾ, “owl”), Akkadian 𒁍𒌝𒄷 (/pûm, bûm; pa'û, ba'û/, “type of bird”), attested since the Old Babylonian Era.
- Alternatively developed from Middle Persian 𐭡𐭥𐭯 (bwp /būf/). If that were the case it would be ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *b(e)u (“owl”); cognate with Latin bubo, Ancient Greek βύας (búas), Old Armenian բու (bu).
