From Middle Persian [script needed] (bʾn /bān/, “roof, rooftop”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wes- (“to clothe, wear, put on”). Compare Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬢𐬵𐬀𐬥𐬀 (vaŋhana), 𐬬𐬀𐬢𐬵𐬁𐬥𐬀 (vaŋhāna, “cover”).
