From Middle Persian [script needed] (bʾn /⁠bān⁠/, roof, rooftop), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wes- (to clothe, wear, put on). Compare Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬢𐬵𐬀𐬥𐬀(vaŋhana), 𐬬𐬀𐬢𐬵𐬁𐬥𐬀(vaŋhāna, cover).
