From Proto-Turkic *diāĺ (stone). Cognates include Old Turkic 𐱃𐱁 (taş, stone)Chuvash чул (čul, stone)Turkmen daş (stone), Yakut таас (taas, stone). Related to Proto-Mongolic *cïlaxun (stone) (cf. Mongolian чулуу (čuluu, stone)) and possibly also related to Proto-Tungusic *ǯola ‎(“stone”) (cf. Evenki дёло (ʒolo, stone)).
