Etymology

From the root س ء ل (s-ʔ-l), cognate with Hebrew שָׁאַל (sha'ál, he asked), Eblaite 𒊭𒀪𒀀𒇻 (ša-ʾ-a-lu /⁠šaʾal⁠/).
