Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Persian سفره (sofre, tablecloth), itself from Arabic سُفْرَة (sufra, victuals).

سفره (sofra) (plural سفر)

  1. meal set out on a cloth or tray
  2. travelling food-wallet that can be spread out
  3. tablecloth, a cloth used to cover a table
    Synonym: دستار (destar)
  4. wooden or metal tray serving as a dining table

Etymology[edit]

From Arabic سُفْرَة (sufra, victuals; table, especially for eating). Displaced native خوان (xân). Cheung speculates it is from a root meaning to make up "beautify"[1]
