From Aramaic שׁוּקָא /‎ ܫܽܘܩܳܐ (šūqā’, street, market), from Akkadian 𒋻 (/⁠sūqu⁠/, street), from Akkadian 𒆸 (/⁠sâqu⁠/, to become narrow). Cognate to Hebrew שׁוּק (šūq).
