Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Middle Hindi پیسا (pysa) (c. 1528),[1] from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀧𑀬𑀁𑀲 (*payaṃsa), from Sanskrit *पदांश (padāṃśa, “quarter part”), from पद (pada, “quarter”) + अंश (aṃśa, “part, piece”),[2] in reference to the coin being worth a quarter of an anna.
