Inherited from Middle Hindi پیسا (pysa) (c. 1528), from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀧𑀬𑀁𑀲 (*payaṃsa), from Sanskrit *पदांश (*padāṃśa, “quarter part”), from पद (pada, “quarter”) +‎ अंश (aṃśa, “part, piece”), in reference to the coin being worth a quarter of an anna.
