Etymology 1[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *kep- (to bend, curve), a possibly dialectal combination of Proto-Indo-European *kh₂emp- (to bend, curve) + *(s)kamb- (crooked) (compare Latin cambiō (to exchange), whence English change), the latter (*(s)kamb-) which may be of the same origin as the former (*kh₂emp-). Cognate with Sanskrit चाप (cāpa, bow, arc), Sanskrit चपल (capala, trembling, unsteady, wavering).[1]
