[edit]Originally the plural form from Aramaic אֵגָּרָא (ʾeggārā, “roof”), from Akkadian 𒂍𒋞 (igārum, “wall”), from Sumerian 𒂍𒋞 (e₂-gar₈ /egar/, “wall”); also borrowed into Arabic إِجَّار (ʔijjār) from Aramaic.
