From the root ܙ-ܪ-ܥ (z-r-ʿ) related to sowing, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Semitic. Compare Akkadian 𒆰 (zēru [NUMUN]), Arabic زَرْع (zarʿ), and Hebrew זֶרַע (zéraʿ).
