From the root ܘ-ܪ-ܩ (w-r-q), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Semitic *waraq- (leaf). Compare Arabic يَرَقَان (yaraqān), يَرْقَان (yarqān) and Hebrew יַרְקָן (yarqān), יַרְקוֹן (yarqôn).
