    Uncertain, possibly inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *(H)ádʰi, derived (by conflation with Proto-Indo-European *éti (over, across), whence *(H)áti) from Proto-Indo-European *(H)n̥dʰí (under, below). Compare Tocharian B ette (lower, down).
