Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘜𑘿𑘮𑘹 (paṇhe), 𑘢𑘡𑘿𑘮𑘹 (panhe) (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀡 (pāṇa), Sanskrit पान (pā́na), पानक (pānaka)). Compare Odia ପଣା (pôṇa, solution of sugar), Bengali পানা (pana, a sweet cold drink).
