Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. As the oldest meaning is "border", Mayrhofer prefers the connection to Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬀 (marəza, border region) and Persian مرز (marz, border), from Proto-Indo-European *merǵ- (compare English march (borderland)) over the connection to *móri (the sea) (compare Latin mare, English mere (lake)).[1]
