Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀦𑁆𑀦𑀸 (chānnā​), from Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀯𑀦𑁆𑀦𑀸 (chāvannā), from 𑀙𑀸𑀯 (chāva) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀦𑁆𑀦- (-nna-), from Sanskrit *छाप (chāpa, young one). Doublet of ছা (cha) and ছাওয়াল (chaōẇal). Cognate with Assamese ছনা (sona), ছানা (sana) and Sylheti ꠍꠣꠘꠣ (sána).

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀦 (chāna), from Sanskrit स्त्यान (styāna, coagulated; density), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *styaHnás, from Proto-Indo-European *styeh₂nós (stiffened), from the root *styeh₂-, metathesized from *steyh₂- (to stiffen). Cognate with Hindi छेना (chenā) and, distantly, English stone.
