Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Middle Bengali ছাও (chaō), from Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀯 (chāva), from Sanskrit *छाप (chāpa, “young one”). Doublet of ছানা (chana) and ছাওয়াল (chaōẇal). Cognate with Assamese ছাৱ (saw) and Romani ćhavo.
