Inherited from Prakrit 𑀡𑀓𑁆𑀓 (ṇakka), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀦𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*nakka) from Sanskrit नासा ("nose") +‎ -क (-ka, diminutive suffix), with the first element from Proto-Indo-Aryan *náHsaH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *náHsaH, from Proto-Indo-European *néh₂s-eh₂ (nose). Cognate with Hindi नाक (nāk).
