Etymology[edit]

From Pali calācala (literally shaking and unshaking; moving and unmoving; etc), from cala (shaking; moving; etc) + acala (unshaking; unmoving; etc); or from Sanskrit चलाचल (calācala, idem), from चल (cala, idem) + अचल (acala, idem); possibly via Old Khmer ចលាចល (calācala, social unrest; social instability); equivalent to Thai จล (jol) +‎ อจล. Cognate with Modern Khmer ចលាចល (caʼlaacɑl).
