From Sanskrit शाल (śālá, court; rampart) or शाला (śā́lā, court; hall; house; workshop); probably via Angkorian Old Khmer śāla (court; hall; pavilion; residence). Compare Old Khmer sālā; Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer śālā; Angkorian Old Khmer sāla. Cognate with Modern Khmer សាលា (saalaa); Lao ສານ (sān). Doublet of ศาลา (sǎa-laa).
