From Sanskrit शाला (śālā, court; hall; house; workshop); perhaps via Old Khmer śālā, śāla (court; hall; house; covered shelter; workshop; large building; large room; etc). Cognate with ᦉᦱᦟᦱ (ṡaalaa), Modern Khmer សាលា (saalaa). And perhaps cognate with Thai ศาล (sǎan).
