Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *saŋᴮ¹ (to bid; to order), from Proto-Tai *saŋᴮ (to order).[1]

Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈᩢ᩠᩵ᨦ, Khün ᩈᩢ᩠᩵ᨦ, Lao ສັ່ງ (sang), ᦉᧂᧈ (ṡang¹), Tai Dam ꪎꪰ꪿ꪉ, Shan သင်ႇ (sàng), Tai Nüa ᥔᥒᥱ (sǎng), Phake ꩬ︀င︀် (saṅ), Ahom 𑜏𑜂𑜫 (saṅ), Zhuang daengq and saengq (dialectal).
