Etymology

From Pali anātha (literally “without protector; without someone to depend on; without husband; etc”), from a- (“lacking; without; etc”) + nātha (“protector; lord; master; owner; husband; etc”); or from Sanskrit अनाथ (anātha, idem), from अ (a, idem) + नाथ (nātha, idem); equivalent to Thai อ (ɔɔ) +‎ นาถ (nâat). Cognate with Khmer អាណិត (ʼaanət).
