From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ba² (“thin”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ba (“thin, flat”). Cognate with Nuosu ꁧ (bbo), Jingpho pha (“thin”), Drung ba (“thin”) (> svba (“to make thin”)), S'gaw Karen ဘူ (boo, “thin”), Old Chinese 薄 (OC *baːɡ, “thin, flimsy”) (STEDT).

The "send" sense is equated with the "thin" sense by MED, though STEDT apparently separates the two and gives no etymology for "send" (pâ "send ( by hand or person )").

Particularly: “MED equates the "cheek" sense with the "flat" sense, perhaps as cheeks (not necessarily cheekbones) are flat surfaces. Could the Tibeto-Burman root *m/s-ba be derived from *ba (“thin, flat”)?”
