Etymology

Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *serp-, with cognates including Latin sarpō, Old Church Slavonic срьпъ (srĭpŭ, “sickle”), and Latvian sirpis. However, there are some difficulties with these connections. There is possibly a contamination with a Semitic borrowing, Proto-Semitic *ḥarb-.
