[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *sr̥p-, with cognates including Old Church Slavonic срьпъ (srĭpŭ, “sickle”), Latvian sirpis. Traditionally connected with Ancient Greek ἁρπάγη (harpágē, “hook”), whence Latin harpagō and English harpoon, in turn uncertainly related to ἅρπη (hárpē, “bird of prey; sickle”), itself uncertainly derived from *serp-.
