Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

A derivation from εἶμῐ (eîmi, to go or come) with a suffix -θμο- has been assumed, comparing also Old Norse eið (isthmus). However, the -σ- is unexplained, so the word could well be of Pre-Greek origin.
