Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The formation is similar to ἄραδος (árados), κέλαδος (kélados) and χρόμαδος (khrómados). Usually connected with Sanskrit समद् (samad, strife, battle). The word could belong to ὁμάζω (homázō, to growl) and thus of onomatopoeic origin, although DELG rejects this comparison because of the semantics.
