Etymology[edit]
Compound of あり (ari, 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb ある (to exist).) + 処 (-ka, “place”, suffixing element that follows nouns or verbs conjugated into the continuative or stem form), literally “existing place, place of existing”.
First cited to the 古今和歌集 (Kokin Wakashū) of the early 900s.[1]
