Etymology 1

Compound of とき (toki) +‎ めく (meku, looking like, behaving like, becoming like, verb-forming suffix).[1][2][3] The derivation of the toki element is unclear. It might be cognate with the doki element in adverb どきどき (dokidoki, throbbingly, beatingly, poundingly) in reference to one's heart.
