Etymology 2

Orthographic borrowing from Japanese 宮城(みやぎ) (miyagi), from 宮城郡 (Miyagi-gun), an ancient district of 陸奥国. The name is attested in the 続日本紀 in 766, while early 8th-century 須恵器 inscriptions record 宮城郡 (Miyaki-gun) and 宮木 (Miyaki). The ultimate etymology is uncertain. One theory connects the name with 多賀城 (Tagajō), founded in 724 as the administrative and military centre of 陸奥国: 宮 (miya) may have referred to the imperial court, making 宮城 literally a “courtly/imperial fortress” (宮なる城). Another derives the older form Miyaki from 屯倉 (miyake, “imperial estate”), referring to lands and storehouses under direct control of the Yamato court, although no such 屯倉 is securely attested in the area. The name was adopted for 宮城県 (Miyagi-ken) in 1872, when 仙台県 (Sendai-ken) was renamed.
