Etymology

From 新撰(しんせん) (shinsen, “new compilation/selection”) + 万葉集(まんようしゅう) (Man'yōshū, oldest anthology of poems compiled in c. 759 CE).

Proper noun

1. a 私撰和歌集 (shisen wakashū, “privately compiled anthology of poems”) in two volumes, thought to be compiled by Sugawara no Michizane around 893–913 CE, with the poems written in 万葉仮名 (man'yōgana)

   Synonym: 菅家万葉集 (Kanke Man'yōshū)
