Usage notes
As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana, especially in biological contexts (where katakana is customary), as ニホンオオカミ.
Synonyms
- 山犬 (yamainu, literally “mountain dog”; biologists consider this to be just a feral dog, but there has been some confusion in general usage)
