Etymology

Cognate with 鋤く (suku, “to hoe”), from the sense of scooping material through a liquid, and with 透く (suku, “to be seen through; to have cracks through”), from the sense of going through, as the liquid goes through the pulp in the straining phase.

Probably also cognate with 掬う (sukuu, “to scoop up”), 救う (sukuu, “to rescue”).
