Etymology
[edit]The Classical Japanese conditional form of the verb 言う (iu, “to say, to speak”): 言わ (iwa, 未然形 (mizenkei, “irrealis form”) of the verb 言う (iu)) + ば (-ba, an inflectional suffix indicating the hypothetical condition).
