Etymology

Originally a compound of へ (he, “separate”) + 屋(や) (ya, “roof; house”). The へ (he) is related to the first element in 隔(へだ)たる (hedataru, “to be apart, separated”). First attested in the late 900s.^[1]

- 1914, 夏目漱石 [Natsume Sōseki], chapter 11, in こゝろ [Kokoro], 下先生と遺書 [Sensei's Testament]:
  私(わたくし)の新(あたら)しく主人(しゅじん)となった室(へや)は、それらよりもずっと立派(りっぱ)でした。
  Watakushi no atarashiku shujin to natta heya wa, sorera yori mo zutto rippa deshita.
  But the room of which I had newly become master was much nicer than any of those.
