Etymology[edit]

Old Japanese [Term?]. 鵜萱 (ugaya, cormorant feathers for thatching roof) +‎ 葺き (fuki, continuative of 葺く (fuku, to thatch)) +‎ 合えず (aezu, negative conjugated form of 合う (au, to meet), or related to 合わせる (awaseru, to put together), signifying incompleteness). The literal meaning could be "Incompletely Thatched with Cormorant Feathers". The name describes the circumstance of his birth, in a parturition hut that hadn't been completely thatched with cormorant feathers.
