Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄀᆞᅀᆞᆶ (Yale: kòzòlh), probably from Old Korean 秋察 (also written in the alternative form Old Korean 秋察尸).

Perhaps related to ᄀᆞᇫ〯다〮 (Yale: kǒz-tá, “to cut; to sever”), referring to the harvest.
