Korean

Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean  (Yale: mwok). Derived from -s substantivation of 묵— (muk-, “to stay, to lodge, to stop”). For a similar semantic derivation, compare Chinese (tíng, “to stop; to stay; to lodge; equal portions; share; allotment”).
