Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as 틀이다 (Yale: thul-ita). From 틀— (teul-, “to turn, twist, wrench”) + (-i-, “passive suffix”) + (-da, “verb ending”).
