-ível m or f (adjective-forming suffix, plural -íveis)

    1. -able, -ible; alternative form of -ável
      abolir (to abolish) + ‎-ível → ‎abolível (abolishable)

      esquecer (to forget) + ‎-ível → ‎esquecível (forgettable)

    Usage notes

    [edit]
    • This form is generally appended to 2nd- and 3rd-conjugation verb stems and, in some cases, to Latin stems, such as those of verbs ending in -por, -ter, and -ver (respectively -pon-, from Latin pono; -ten-, from Latin teneo; and -ven-, from Latin venio).
    • Some words ending in -ível are descended directly from Latin instead of being formed from a stem and a suffix.
