Suffix[edit]

-е́ть or -еть (-étʹ or -etʹ)

  1. The infinitive suffix for some verbs; often indicatives an intransitive or perfective verb. Becomes -ать (-atʹ) after unpaired palatal or formerly palatal consonants (ж ч ш щ). Becomes -ять (-jatʹ) after vowels. Forms both class-5 and class-1 verbs. Probably not productive in class-5 verbs except possibly for onomatopoeic verbs.
