Russian

Etymology

-и́к (-ík) +‎ -ный (-nyj)

Pronunciation

Suffix

-и́чный (-íčnyj)

  1. Suffixed used to form adjectives from nouns.
    аристокра́т (aristokrát, aristocrat) + ‎-и́чный (-íčnyj) → ‎аристократи́чный (aristokratíčnyj, aristocratic)
    ме́тод (métod, method) + ‎-и́чный (-íčnyj) → ‎методи́чный (metodíčnyj, methodical)
год (god, year) + ‎-и́чный (-íčnyj) → ‎годи́чный (godíčnyj, year (relational); annual, yearly)

Usage notes

  • The vast majority of adjectives with this suffix are based off of foreign roots, and are often parallel to foreign terms ending in English -ic or equivalents in other languages (e.g. French -ique, German -ik). As a result, it is often not clear if a given term ending in -и́чный (-íčnyj) was formed within Russian or whether the term ending in -ic/-ique/-ik was borrowed directly with -ный (-nyj) added.
