Etymology

From Classical Mongolian ᠤᠨ (-un) and ᠶᠢᠨ (-yin), from Middle Mongol ᠤᠨ (-un) and ᠶᠢᠨ (-yin).

  • IPA(key): /iːŋ/ (making no vowel mutation to the previous syllable)

Suffix

-ын (-yn)

  1. Used to form a definite possessive (genitive) case after a back-vowel syllable ending with a consonant, or a silent vowel after г (g) or н (n)
    гар (gar, hand) + ‎-ын (-yn) → ‎гарын (garyn, hand’s, of hand)
    барга (barga) + ‎-ын (-yn) → ‎баргын (bargyn)
    бана (bana) + ‎-ын (-yn) → ‎банын (banyn)
  2. Used to form patronymics
    Мөнхбаатар (Mönxbaatar, given name) + ‎-ын (-yn) → ‎Мөнхбаатрын (Mönxbaatryn, patronymic)
