Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Japanese. Originally derived from verb とづ (todzu) as the stem form とぢ (todji) + intransitive / passive auxiliary verb (ru). Over time, the distinction between (dji) and (ji) was lost, leading to modern とじる (tojiru).
