Etymology
Partial regularization of the Classical Latin possum. The form possō is found beginning in the early second century CE in the letters of Claudius Terentianus.[1] The infinitive potēre and the 1SG imperfect potēbam (modeled after Classical conjugations such as potēs) are attested several times in the sixth century CE, while poteō (replacing possō and reflecting a full regularization of the verb) is first attested in 745 CE.[2]
