Cognate with Old Norse púki (dialectal Swedish puke (“devil”)), Middle Low German spōk, spūk (“apparition, ghost”), Middle Dutch spooc (“apparition, ghost”) (Dutch spook), Middle High German gespük (“a haunting”) (German Spuk).
