beweren
Dutch
Etymology
From a merger of two Middle Dutch verbs:
- Middle Dutch beweren, an eastern variant of bewaren (“to prove”), from waer (“true”) (modern waar). Equivalent to (deprecated template usage) be- + waar + -en.
- Middle Dutch beweren, equivalent to be- + weren (“to defend against, to hold back”). Closely related to bewaren (“to uphold, to stand one's ground”) (modern bewaren).
