Old Norse

Etymology

From miðr (middle) + garðr (yard; enclosured land; realm) or directly from Proto-Germanic *midjagardaz (Middle Earth). Cognate with Old English middangeard, Old Saxon Middilgard, Old High German Mittilagart, Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌿𐌽𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌳𐍃 (midjungards).
