Etymology

From Middle English abiten, from Old English ābītan (to bite in pieces, tear to pieces, bite, eat, devour, gnaw, taste, partake of, consume), from Proto-Germanic *uz- (out) + *bītaną (to bite), equivalent to a- +‎ bite.
